Hobgob Day Afternoon [Post Session 13]
« on: October 17, 2017, 03:43:17 PM »
Doctor Wicker was used to being overlooked and considered harmless.  It was an interesting turn of circumstance that she was targeted first by the leader of the gang of hobgoblins.   The titanic sword wasn’t one she had readily seen in her experience as the armaments of Lantan were generally more precision based.  The experience had her invoke powers she rarely used, siphoning the illumination from the area.

The defeat of the assailants came with the finality of her stepping out from the field of Darkness, pupils devoid of their bright inquisitive blue, now shark-eye-black behind her glasses.

She unceremoniously plunged her screwdriver into the remaining hobgoblin’s back, impaling a bundle of nerves to utterly disable him.  He froze, standing in place with his muscles locked in spasm.

Her pale hair veiled half of her face in an eerie goth-emo fashion and she darkly recited “Even the mightiest organisms are just circuits; able to be interrupted by the smallest instrument.” Gothriona pulls free the screwdriver, which causes the hobgoblin to simply collapse in the style of a Jenga tower, the Doctor having removed the pivotal piece.

With a flicking gesture of her head, the prisoner’s weapon clattered away from his reach in a whiff of telekinesis.

He is, still alive, of course, though at their mercy for the supposed questioning.

When all was said and done, the weapons were lowered and the blood ceased falling, Westra was left watching Catriona with a wary, skeptical-looking gaze. The disabled hobgoblin groaned from the ground in front of this oddly macabre version of the doctor, though, and prompted Westra into motion once more.

"Everyone alright?" she asked, though her glance lingered primarily on the doctor, as though expecting the answer there to be in the negative. She did spare a moment to make a point of visually assessing the others for any life-threatening situations. If no one was directly in need of assistance, Westra would use a boot to turn the goblin over onto his back by a toe at his hip. Though it was not exactly a kind gesture, neither was it an abusive one, though from the look of disgust on the paladin's face, it could have easily been so.

"Would you like to live?" she asked him, simply.

The hobgoblin growled and groaned as he fell to his knees before his face fell into the soft wooded soil. Blood congealing on the ground from his nearby allies made it hard to breath until Westra flipped him over. He grimaces before baring his teeth and biting the air in her direction. "Kiiiilllll me human, there are many who will avenge me of your kind. I care not."

The gutteral tone of his voice was a bit difficult to understand, but a clear hatred in his it left little doubt death was not a thing he feared, nor any of the Watch. He moved his head back and forth seeming to not understand the paralysis caused by the Doctor's surgical strike.

Catriona had a hand at her side, but a truly obvious injury was not readily visible.  The gloomy affectation she had taken on remained and her answer to the paladin’s question was that of a nihilistic teenager.  "Physical pain is a reminder that I am still a part of this slow but certain entropy we call existence.”

Someone get her some black lipstick and some spiky jewelry already.

The prisoner’s defiant nature was not the type of thing she expected to see, but given the way he kept fighting after his entire unit had been felled, it made sense that fear of death was not a motivator.  “He is short sighted.”

Still with her hand holding her side, Catriona crouched down some feet away and stared at the grunt, addressing him in his native tongue of GoblinA dec ar duuch rhaan ghuugaan akaagaarec duun dregaan o akakaan. (Translation: I think it would be more interesting to drive you mad and see you trapped by lunacy).”  Catriona unassuming as she was, could not really intimidate anyone with threats and bluster.  While not tough or menacing, she did have a knack for being frustrating!

Her head tilts forward some, visage dark with concentration. She telepathically speaks in his mind, as loudly as she can, reciting the numbers of Pi (π).

~Three mark one four one five nine two six five nine two six five three five eight nine seven nine three two three eight four six two six four three three eight three two seven nine five eight ∞ (and on and on and on, in an attempt to be as annoying as possible)~

The goblin's eyes widened as the comely human switched to his native tongue. It sounded strange and much more technically correct that one that actually spoke the tongue regularly, but her words were understandable to the brute. His response was only a scoff at first before he added in goblin. "Come here pretty and I shall show you how mad I already am!"

His face contorted moments later as the Doc interjected herself into his mind, and his head shook from side to side, unable to cover his ears as he believe this would help somehow. Around the 75th number he groaned and shouted. "ENOUGH! What do you want of me filthy human?" His teeth remained barred at her.

Westra paused at the hobgoblin's defiance, struck by a moment of indecision. While she normally would have attempted to bully her way through to the creature's compliance, the doctor's recent criticisms were not far from her mind. She looked to the woman in question, her brow knitted in thought as she tried to weigh alternatives to the brutish threats that'd sat poorly with Catriona before. Before Westra reached a decision, however, Catriona surprised her. Not only did the fair-haired doctor speak directly to the prisoner, but she did so in the abrasive, foul tongue of the goblins. Westra did nothing to keep her surprise (and mild disgust if we're being honest) from her face, but she did step back and let the doctor interact with the prisoner however she liked.

For a moment there seemed to be nothing but silence after that. Westra glanced to the others to check their reactions (dis some weird shit, right?), and had just looked back to the ominous-looking doctor to speak when the hobgoblin began showing signs of discontent. Westra eyed him and then the doctor suspiciously, just as the hobgoblin relented and caved. Though she most certainly had questions for ye olde doctor fair, she did not wish to miss the opportunity presented.

"Tell us what you know of the nearby castle and those within," she commanded, stepping back closer to the prone foe.

He let out a bellow of a laugh at Westra, perhaps he was indeed already mad. "You fools come upon Cragmaw Castle, home of the goblin hordes. lead by King Grol! Venture ahead and be consumed by our masses." He continued to laugh hysteriacally, his head rocking back and forth as he did.

He stopped after a time and spit on the ground next to Westra's boot.

As the grunt relented, she moved aside to allow the Captain to do the questioning. The overly aggressive response, while expected, was enough to cause the bitter ennui of gloom to snap out of her, pupils finding their more amicable shade of azure blue.

With a wince of a sort, she rose and muttered to herself under her breath. “Not human or filthy, toothless cog.” Strange insult (especially given that the hobgoblin did have teeth), but in a land of clockwork, gears and steam, it probably made more sense.

“What do you call masses? Like ten of you?  It would seem you don’t do well with numbers.” she probed, attempting to find a more accurate number of this King Grol’s forces.

Other than that, she did not have any kind of extensive knowledge with "prisoners of war” or evil castles.  She did however recall just yesterday how Captain Westra and Raithe were browbeating that town master person;  it was likely best to continue to leave this matter up to them where there was more experience.

Maybe the Hobgoblin "Boss" had papers, orders or other information on him, which is where she went to look.

The goblin paused for only a second as the Doctor's questioning, a large grin forming on his face. "Hundreds, I count well enough to know that." He continued to smile in a disconcerting fashion as the doctor turned and walked to the 'boss'.

Among the find assortment of paraphernalia on the goblin's body, Cat found some half eaten bones of various animals, a few copper, what looked to be a severed human toe, and a parchment.

As was known, the doctor was not grossed out easily, picking at the belongings with the eye of a forensic scientist.  There was little of value.

Catriona hands the parchment to Westra.  "Black Spider's signature?" she says, pointing at the imprint under the text of the note.

Could there really be hundreds in this castle? That sounded like an exaggeration or obfuscation.  She did not know enough on this castle to make a proper assessment.
